Yorkshire – England’s Food Capital
Wayside Holiday Park is surrounded by a rich tapestry of fields, culture and views – but what abounds in possibly greatest measure, is our incredible food.
Yorkshire people get great food: the invention of the Yorkshire Pudding surely points to that! In all seriousness however, this is a region not to be missed and is the perfect holiday location for any self-respecting foodie.
Let’s start with a fact; outside of Greater London, Yorkshire has more Michelin starred restaurants than anywhere else in the UK, testament if ever there was one, that Yorkshire is the home of amazing food!
The Star Inn at Harome, Black Swan at Oldstead and Pipe and Glass in Beverley, are all within easy reach of the holiday homes here at Wayside Holiday Park. You might not be dining at them every day, but for that special occasion or memorable night, these are the places to be. Great food and a great location.
If you’ve watched every episode of Masterchef and fancy your skills in the kitchen we’ve got all the beautiful boutiques and earthy farmers’ markets to buy wonderful produce from.
The nearby market town of Malton is fast becoming the food capital of Yorkshire – and if we’re really honest – England in general. Each May, the town is host to a two day food festival; trestle tables laden with wonderful fayre and air heavy with incredible aromas. Between this there’s also a cracking monthly food market.
Punching well above its weight is Hovingham Farmers’ Market – small but seriously good, this little market convenes once a month and was titled Famers’ Market of the Year in 2012. People flock here bright and early so don’t delay on the first Saturday of every month.
It’s not an official record so don’t go searching in the book this Christmas, but North Yorkshire is also home to England’s most northerly herb farm, vineyard and cider orchards (not all in one location). In fact the county is home to nine commercial vineyards, so banish from your mind a wine-tasting holiday in the south – come to Yorkshire instead.
Our beer heritage is as diverse as the wine; from our neighbours at the Cropton Brewery, just up the road on the edge of the North York Moors to the Wold Top Brewery in, well, the Yorkshire Wolds… we can offer a porter to please every palate!
You don’t have to go on this wonderful tour alone. Sue Nelson runs Yorkshire Food Finder which connects chefs, growers and consumers together; offering food tours, socials and tutorials. If you want to get behind the curtain and see real food production, Sue is the lady to make that happen.
If by the evening you fancy a coffee and a fantastic chocolate, that’s covered too. York has a long connection with chocolate via Terrys and Nestle but is still doing great things in the artisan arena. The city was recently host to the judging of the International Chocolate Awards and there’s plans to revive part of the Terrys factory too.
Harrogate is, of course, the home of tea and coffee in North Yorkshire. Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate are the producers of everything from Yorkshire Tea to speciality ground coffee and are sure to provide the greatest brew.
What’s more Wayside Holiday Park is central to all of this! From fantastic crab and lobster arriving into Bridlington’s harbour, grouse shoots on the North York Moors or Yorkshire Dales’ bred lamb, we’re perfectly positioned to sample it all.
We’ve whetted your taste buds, so why not join the Wayside Family and enjoy Yorkshire for yourself?
